Berthold Damshäuser was born in 1957 in Wanne-Eickel, Germany. Since 1986, he has been teaching Indonesian Language and Literature at the Institute for Oriental and Asian Studies at the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelm-Universität Bonn. He is the editor of Orientierungen – Zeitschrift zur Kultur Asiens and translates Indonesian poetry into German as well as from German into Indonesian. Damshäuser also edits anthologies of Indonesian and German poetry, including Jakarta and Berlin im Spiegel der Lyrik (2002, English: Jakarta and Berlin in the mirror of poetry). In collaboration with the Indonesian writer and poet Agus R. Sarjono, he published Seri Puisi Jerman, a series of German poetry translated into Indonesian, released since 2003 in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Jakarta. He is founding member of the German-Indonesian Commission for Language and Literature and editor of the Indonesian literary journal Jurnal Sajak.
