Heri Dono was born in Yogyakarta, South Java, and studied at the Indonesian Institute of Arts. Moreover, he learned wayang kulit (traditional shadow puppet theatre) from master Sukasman. He further works as a painter and combines traditional wayang elements with western concepts of post-expressionism and cubism. His installations and performances include also video and sound, which he shows at biennales and in various museums and galleries around the world. As an international successful artist he belongs to the New Internationalisms and is part of a new Indonesian generation of artists, which separate themselves from the western contemporary art.
